January 2: Genesis 4-6 Romans 2

In Romans 1: v 22 we find "Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools" Reading Genesis 4-6 reminds us that what ever we exchange for the presence of God leaves us as restless wanderers in this earth.(Gen. 14) Cain insults God by keeping the best parts for himself and offers God what was left. His offering reveals his heart. Abel offers his best to God and that is what God wants from each of us. In those times the first fruit meant that in thanksgiving you offer God a portion in recognition that without him you would have none. The sacrifice means you really could not afford it, but by faith you trust that God would continue to give. Additionally, it was a sacrifice because it was the part you wanted and had waited. We do this even now with b-day celebrations, the honoree gets the first cut. Cains arrogance spread through his family and his community. Eventually, putting self above God will lead to loss. On the other hand, putting God first leads to blessings. We see that in the midst of corruption, Noah lived in a way that was pleasing to God and God saved him from destruction.
Romans 2 warns us all not to judge others in how they live. But assures us that we all will have to give account for what we do. I close today with Romans 2: 28-end which is a great summary profession of faith in Jesus is nothing without giving him our hearts. If our hearts belong to him then we would hold back nothing from Him. Does your offering reveal your heart for God? Does your heart reveal you as a self seeker or a glory seeker? (Rom. 2:7-8)
